The Advanced Level has been designed to provide the tailored support for experienced councillors and those in key roles. Unlike Foundation and Intermediate Level, it is not topic specific. The content will be tailored to the needs of the individual or the group and a lot of the development is one to one. The Advanced Level is a tailored approach to individual development and is solution-focused. This can include Coaching, Mentoring, Action Learning Sets, Master Classes and Personal Development Planning Sessions.

Coaching Using a coach can help councillors to improve performance, gain greater personal insight and understanding of others and of the challenges they face. Our approach is an appreciative one which focuses on helping to create effective solutions to real issues. Working with the councillors we can create a personal development plan (PDP) tailored to individual needs.

Mentoring We know that councillors find it helpful to learn from experts with a real understanding of the political environment. Our mentors are experienced in working in a political environment and will often be a serving or former councillor. The role of the mentor is to listen, advise and encourage the councillor to solve problems and deal with difficult situations.

Action Learning Sets Action learning sets offer a confidential and supportive environment in which councillors can discuss issues and problems with a small group of people who share similar experiences. They provide the opportunity to get support from fellow councillors and to help find solutions that work. The set can be arranged in house or with councillors from other councils; it can be single political party or cross party.

Master Classes A master class is a type of seminar but it’s a seminar with a difference. The person giving the master class is a specialist about a particular topic and the seminar itself focuses on one or a small number of topics, allowing participants the opportunity to look at the issues in depth.
